4 essential free FX plugins for a lo-fi sound
The sounds of LoFi take many forms in music production. It's the final one that we're going to concentrate on here, helping you create chiptune and lo-res sounds that'll put your listeners in mind of a bygone age of early consoles and arcade games. In FL Studio, there are two tools that can quickly put us in the retro digital mood. This a great way to add some Lo-Fi crunchiness to your tracks, although it can be difficult to control.
On the other hand, Dither can help fine-tune the bitcrushing effect to get exactly the sound you want. Dither is low-level noise added to the audio signal in an effort to keep the level of the audio from dropping below the least significant bit. In other words, it makes the quiet parts of the audio slightly louder so that more of the signal can be heard when the bit depth is reduced. Here is a visual example of this, with a snare drum:. Route the audio you wish to transform to a mixer track, insert a Dither plugin and a Bitcrusher immediately after it.
Adjust the bitcrushing effect until you get the amount of crunchiness that you want. Once you have the bitcrusher set, unmute the dither plugin and adjust its settings. More extreme amounts of bitcrushing will need higher levels of dither to make an impact. This will let you make the dither as loud as possible. Adjust the other three controls to taste. This is going to be largely trial and error. Original source - here. Soul Jazz Piano. Indian Vocal Sessions. Steve Mac - Mac's House.

You insert them on your instrument or audio tracks and open them up in the same way as a synth; and like those virtual recreations of classic gear, plug-in effects can also emulate old gear.
In fact, many of the early ones were developed to copy expensive analogue equipment again, just like virtual synths. Here we look at the best vst plugins — both paid and free — that will help craft better beats.

Creating lo-fi music in the digital realm is all about inducing the flavor of analog imperfections, tape machine modulations and the colorations caused by worn equipment and mechanical artifacts.
Go easy on the salt thought! You want to go subtle with these lo-fi seasonings. Hitting your pianos or keyboard instruments with a little detuned, vintage vibe or retro wobble can give your track that warm and nostalgic feeling all over. Add old-school life and take your virtual MIDI instrument tracks back in time to an old-fashioned dimension by dialing in a few simple parameters of the Kramer Master Tape plugin:.
What was once an unwanted mechanical byproduct of analog tape is now what we seek when we want that lo-fi character. If you grew up listening to music on a cassette deck, Walkman or boombox then you know the sound. If not, sorry, but you missed countless hours of rewinding, fast-forwarding, and waiting forever to catch your favorite song on the record to add to your mixtape.
Wow and flutter are the trick to that analog tape sound. They are the modulations and fluctuations created by the friction of the mechanical parts of the tape machine and the tape itself. You could go for the quick fix of using a sample of turntable noise or clicks. But having the control and ability to fine-tune those vinyl characteristics gives your track much more life and added authenticity.
One of the easiest ways to inject the feeling of true vinyl in-the-box is with the Abbey Road Vinyl plugin:. I may sound like a broken record, but again, the trick with vinyl effects is to be subtle.

You know…those things we all used to wake up to before our smartphones! Some call it the underwater filter effect. Whatever you call it, this trick can give your mix a nice low fidelity touch. The traditional and common approach to achieving this effect involves either grabbing an EQ, rolling off the lows in the Hz range, and cutting the highs between kHz.
So why not go all the way by customizing a unique atmosphere and impression to your lo-fi textures. You can get even more creative with the lo-fi radio trick using a combination of amp simulation with the PRS SuperModels amp sim plugin, and the sound-shaping filter effects of the MetaFilter plugin:.

Although you can definitely do some cool stuff with the freeware I mentioned so far there are some paid options no lofi producer should miss out on.
